All proceeds benefit Massachusetts General Hospital’s Global Surgical Initiative.
Launched in the late 1980s, the Cartagena Surgical Mission is staffed by surgeons, residents, nurses and other medical personnel from Mass General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) and other hospitals around the country. It is led by Dr. William G. Austen, Jr.,Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Once a year, Dr. Austen and his team travel more than 2,000 miles to the same charity hospital in Cartagena, Colombia. The mission of this project is to change the lives of children born with congenital deformities, with special focus on cleft lip and palate. These children endure a host of challenges ranging from poor nutrition to hearing loss to social isolation. None of the families served can afford to pay for services and many travel for miles on foot so their children can be seen.
During its existence, the Cartagena Surgical Mission has served more than 700 children who otherwise would have no access to care. Your support literally transforms lives.
