Donor Story

The one hundred honoree: Deric Milligan

by
Mass General Giving

Deric Milligan and his wife, Kristen, founded Inheritance of Hope, an organization dedicated to young families, like their own, who were anticipating the loss of a parent.

Together, Kristen and Deric had been fighting her rare liver cancer for several years while raising three young children. First diagnosed at age 30, Kristen found few resources for parents in their situation. For her children, all under age 5, she tried to fill the gap by writing a book to help them better understand what was happening. That was when she and Deric conceived the idea of forming a community of mutual support.

The faith-based Inheritance of Hope accomplishes its mission through literature, online resources, webinars, scholarships and, perhaps most powerfully, through its Legacy Retreats®. During these all-expenses-paid getaways, families receive counseling, support and most importantly, the chance to relax, make memories and enjoy time together. Since 2008, families from 38 states have participated in these life-changing experiences in New York City and Orlando, Florida.

Stressing that “Every Family Deserves a Legacy®,” the nonprofit encourages families to find ways to preserve and celebrate their unique heritage by creating videos, writing notes, making audio recordings and leaving gifts for young children. Each family attending a Legacy Retreat® is afforded the opportunity to record a professional quality Legacy Video.

Kristen lost her battle with cancer in 2012. However, Deric continues to lead Inheritance of Hope, honoring Kristen’s legacy with his perseverance and commitment.
